FSUS Classroom Simulator

The International Conference on Computer Supported Collaborative Learning has accepted a conference paper written by Dr. Fengfeng Ke, associate professor of Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies. The paper, “Immersive Simulation on Collaborative Learning about a Complex Dynamic System,” examines the effect of Astronaut Challenge, an immersive, flight-simulation-based learning program, on the collaborative learning process and science knowledge development of ninth grade students.

The research focused on the space flight simulator instructional system (SFIS) developed by the Science Department at Florida State University Schools (FSUS) through a grant funded by the Florida Department of Education. The focus of the grant was to develop two systems: a classroom based system that could easily be replicated by science teachers in Florida and a mobile space flight system which could be used throughout the state to promote STEM. Peter Carafano, associate professor in the Science Department at FSUS and co-author of the paper, contributed to the research through his experience as astronaut challenge program director and knowledge of the SFIS.

The International Conference on Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) is a major international event, which gathers together people involved in all aspects of the field of technology-based collaborative learning, including research, education, training and technology. The conference is organized by the International Society of the Learning Sciences (ISLS) and occurs every two years. The papers accepted by CSCL are generally in the nature of collaborative learning in technologically supported environments from empirical, theoretical, conceptual and design based approaches.

CSCL is one of only two conferences in the field of Learning Sciences. This year’s conference will be held June 7-11, 2015, in Gothenburg, Sweden.
